Air Traffic Control Tower Vienna

With the expansion of the Vienna Airport, a construction of a new aviation safety facility with a control tower was required. In 2002, an open planning competition was initiated which was ultimately won by the consortium of Zechner-Lorenz with an impressive design entry by Martin Zechner.

The approximately 108 m high tower is divided into a pedestal section, a middle zone with a stretched membrane area, and the head of the tower. The 6-storey base section will house the installation of the flight safety system and is aligned to the orthogonal layout of the roads. The head of the tower is twisted 45 degrees to the base in order to provide the best possible view of the runways. The middle section is covered by a translucent membrane material that provides a projection surface for displaying multimedia content (information, advertising, art, etc.) with its profile continuously changing between the geometry of the base section to that of the top of the tower.

The main construction consists entirely of reinforced concrete with the over 100m long shaft section of the tower which is in the form of a concrete pipe with a constant thickness of 45 cm and a diameter of around 10 m. The shaft section was built using a continuous moving construction method. The supporting structure of the floors of the base section consists of 30 cm thick rounded supports made of reinforced steel each having a diameter of 30 to 50 cm.
