Roofing Münzhof

Self-supporting glass roof in the middle of Vienna

In the course of the general renovation of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Vienna, the roofing of the “Münzhof” was planned in addition to other renovations. A glass barrel roof was provided as weather protection for the approximately 120 m² inner courtyard.

Lots of glass, little steel!
The barrel roof rises, curved in a single direction.

Rectangular panes are lined up and connected to each other at their corners by special glass holders. In addition to extensive computer models, numerous tests were carried out for the development of the glass holder in order to determine the limit load capacity of the barrel roof. Thus, in addition to tests on individual panes, a large-scale test was also carried out on a roof segment on a scale of 1:1.
