The impossible furniture store
Right in the heart of the West Train Station in Vienna, where the ”Blue House“ used to stand, the new, innovative furniture store from IKEA is built. The 7-storey building with a unique city-store concept will offer plenty of room for everyone. Apart from the usual shop floor, the building will also offer a restaurant, a hotel, and a green terrace roof area.
The architects imagined the construction just as if it was a piece of furniture of a building block system. Conceived as a skeleton framework, Peikko supports and Cofrastra roof elements come into effect. The casing expands around the steel grid that wraps itself around the building like a cage and then will be greened. This is what Thomas Lorenz and his team call a great challenge. Particularly for the brain matter of the static engineers is the Viennese underground train line that can not be overloaded nor can be shaken or moved by the construction. Impossible, this Swedes.
