A11 Karawanken tunnel entrance area

Arrive safely together

Between 1987 and 1991, the single-tube Karawanken tunnel between Austrian and Slovenian borders was constructed as part of the A11 Karawanken motorway. The new construction of a second tube also requires the construction of a second lane in the tunnel entrance area in Carinthia. A clear case for the bridge calculations of Thomas Lorenz and his team.

Light at the end of the tunnel
The foreland area is completed, the second tunnel under construction. Part of the entire project was a 344 metres long prefabricated reinforced concrete foreland bridge, a 140 metres long anchored retaining wall as well as a 105 metres long earthworks area. In order to better evaluate the construction methods required as well as better dimensions, the entire foreland area was modeled in 3D including the landscape.
