Up and down
Who did not know it, the ”Hoppelbahn“ in Vienna? The elevated motorway at Inzersdorf was built in the beginning of the 1970s and lies between the Hansson corner and the Southern Motorway. At that time, the section was built to handle around 45,000 cars and trucks per day. Today, more than 100,000 cars travel across this section of the A23 per day. A renovation was unavoidable.
A structural “Open heart transplant“
For eight years, ”one of the largest and most complex restorations of the last years“ (according to Andreas Fromm, Managing Director of the ASFINAG Bau) worked on. All bridge supports along this entire section of motorway were removed entirely and completely replaced new. All this, naturally, while still maintaining the flow of traffic. An absolute logistical, static and constructional challenge. In total, 11 bridge supports as well as various associated objects along the 2 km long section were renovated. Alone at Thomas Lorenz more than 12,000 hours were invested. Well then – have a safe journey!
